Motorhome Rental UK

It’s not International Mother Language Day anymore, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t utilise a motorhome rental to enjoy the diversity of the UK!

Motorhome Rental UK

We couldn’t possibly ignore the two other countries that make up the United Kingdom. We’ve already had a look at the unique languages originated by England and Scotland, but Northern Ireland and Wales are fantastic locations with really distinctive dialogues. You don’t have to wait until the 21st of February next year to use a motorhome rental in the UK to explore the joys of language. Rockin Vans are always ready to go. Our motorhome rentals throughout the UK can allow you to have the freedom to explore some fantastic locations. You won’t have to worry about booking a hotel or travel, as you’ll be equipped with both.

Northern Ireland (Irish Gaelic, Ulster Scots)

Similar to Scotland, Northern Ireland is an English speaking country that comes with its own set of unique languages that are not as commonly spoken. Irish is native to the entirety of Ireland. That is to say, it’s not just Northern Ireland that lays claim to this almost lyrical language. Originally though, it was predominantly spoken throughout what is now known as Northern Ireland. According to the 2011 Census, only 3.7% of the population regard themselves as being fluent. However, similarly to Scottish Gaelic, there has been an increased interest in preserving Gaelic. This has been displayed through an increased focus on it being taught in schools. However, perhaps less known is the second language of Ireland; Ulster Scots. This is a dialect that is more specifically targeted to a group of people. It comprises of aspects of Scots, with the main difference being that it is spoken in Northern Ireland opposed to Scotland. Only 2% of the population claim to speak Ulster Scots.

Now in terms of visiting, Ireland is a gorgeous country full of mythos and charm. From the busy streets of Belfast to the stunning hexagonal Giant’s Causeway, there is so much to be experienced. There are so some really interesting tourist attractions that people interested in literacy and history will enjoy. We believe that is a fantastic place to visit with a motorhome rental in the UK. In particular, we would recommend visiting the Titanic Experience in Belfast.

Wales (Welsh/Cymraeg)

Last but certainly not least, we have Wales. Unlike the other countries throughout the United Kingdom, the main distinctive language of Cymraeg (or Welsh) is still relatively common. According to the 2011 census, 19% of the population of Wales are able to speak Welsh. Being that the language is potentially up to 4,000 years old, it is entirely plausible that Welsh is one of the oldest surviving languages throughout Europe. Similar to the variations of Gaelic throughout the isles, Cymraeg is a variation of the Celtic language. It has also had a similar journey in that it has somewhat fallen out of circulation. In fact, it almost became totally extinct in the 20th century as the numbers of speakers plummeted. It was revived by political campaigns back in the 1960s. The formation of Cymdeithas Yr Iaith Cymraeg led to the eventual ‘Welsh Language Bill’ which gave it equal status to English in all public bodies. It is common for Welsh children to study Welsh until at least age 16.

Wales is a country that we think everyone should visit with our motorhome rental in the UK. We have a new Rockin Vans depot in Redditch that is only a three-hour drive away from Wales, meaning it is now easier than ever to take a trip to Wales. The classic location within Wales that we would recommend is Snowdonia. Who wouldn’t want to visit the fourteen majestic peaks? For fans of history and mythos, Snowdonia is featured heavily throughout the King Arthur legends. Wales is also home to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. It is significantly easier to refer to it as Llanfair PG, but where is the fun in that? A visit to see that sign is alone worth it, nevermind the other stunning sights spotted throughout the country.

Northern Ireland and Wales are just two more places to enjoy our motorhome rental for UK travel. For more information, please feel free to get in contact with one of our team.

Campervan Rental UK

Happy International Mother Language Day! Why not celebrate the diversity of language with a campervan rental in the UK?

Campervan Rental UK

Budget VW Camper to hire from Rockin Vans

Despite English being the most commonly spoken language in the sovereign state; Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland all come along with their own set of unique languages. Some are maybe less spoken than others, but all deserve to be preserved and celebrated. The UN has set the 21st of February as ‘International Mother Language Day.’ Like with any holiday, we like to view this as an opportunity to go on a jaunt around the United Kingdom. It’s there and ready with tons of opportunity for adventure, education and great memories. Why not celebrate the many great languages of our wee island with a Rockin Vans campervan rental in the UK?

Scotland (Scots, Scottish Gaelic)

The first country on our list and already we’ve stumbled into the dialect versus language debate. There are no set criteria to distinguish a language from a dialect and depending on what scholar you ask, you’re going to get a different answer. Is Scots technically a language? Debatable, but it’s our blog and we say yes for now. It’s generally regarded as a slight variation on English, but it does change depending on the region all of which have their own distinct dialects. The Scottish language is well known throughout the world. After all, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is used throughout the English-speaking world as a New Year’s Eve tradition. While you could celebrate by reading The Broons (Browns) comics, why wouldn’t you take the opportunity to take a trip throughout Scotland with your campervan rental in the UK? While there you can also get a taste of the easier to define language, Scottish Gaelic.

Maybe we’re a little bias, but we believe Scotland is a fantastic country in which to utilise a campervan rental in the UK. There is such a staggering variety of things to do and see, that it is an impossibility to see it all in one trip. You have the popular highland views and scenery, but then you also have a wide selection of distinct cities. For those wanting to get the most out of a shopping experience, Glasgow is the place to be. Alternatively, Edinburgh is an amazing city for history enthusiasts. In Scotland, there is something for everyone.

England (English)

According to the 2011 Census, 98% of people in the United Kingdom speak English. It is by far the most popular language in the region. If you can read this, you probably have at least a basic understanding of the nuance of the language and how it works. Just to give you some extra insight though; it’s a West Germanic language that was originated back in the 5th century by Anglo-Saxon settlers. Like with any language, it has developed throughout the years and older iterations are now regarded as being extinct. That is to say, you’re not going to be able to go to London in a campervan and then learn how to speak Old English.

England has some of the most iconic cities in the world. London is known internationally for its fashion, tourist attractions and shopping districts. If you’re looking for a painfully British experience, it’s a place that even people from the country need to visit. Who doesn’t want to have a tea near the Queen’s house? However, that’s not all that England has to offer. Despite not being as well known for it as Scotland and Ireland, England also has some absolutely stunning landscapes. It’s also the home of Stonehenge, the mysterious yet magnificent stone ring monument that is known globally. It’s a place you have to visit with your campervan rental in the UK.

Keep an eye out on our blog, where we’ll soon post a look at the offerings of both Wales and Northern Ireland!

It’s also worth noting that due to the freedom of movement that modernity has brought about, these countries aren’t just limited to the languages that we’ve listed here. We’re a diverse nation with many languages from around the globe, all of which should be celebrated.

To get the most out of International Mother Language Day, why not travel in a Rockin Van campervan rental in the UK. For more information, please feel free to get in contact.

Campervan Hire Wales: St David’s Day

Looking for an excuse to visit Wales?
Why not go on the 1st of March for St David’s Day!

Campervan Hire Wales: St David’s Day

The year is flying in. We’re now almost in March. Where has the time gone? Anyway, March is a fantastic month for travel. Well, any month is, but March also offers a great excuse to take a visit to Wales. St David’s day falls on the 1st of March and is a fantastic reason to take advantage of our campervan hire in Wales. It’s a gorgeous country to visit with an interesting and diverse culture. Not to mention, there are tons of things to see and do. Whether you’re looking for an adventure holiday or a visit to see some stunning world heritage sites; Wales has everything you could possibly want.

Who was St David?

To understand who St David is and why he gets a day dedicated to him, you need to be familiar with the concept of patron saints. According to Historic UK, a ‘Patron Saint’ is someone the nation “calls upon in times of great peril.” It’s also very religious based. The UK has four patron saints; St Andrew for Scotland, St for George for England and St Patrick for Ireland. St David is the patron saint of Wales. He is a big part of Welsh culture, but surprisingly little is known about his life. It is thought that he lived to be one hundred, but the first writing on his life only appeared five hundred years after his death so no one knows for certain. Supposedly, he came up with the idea of Welsh soldiers wearing a leek so as to distinguish them from the Saxon invaders they were combating with. The Welsh won the battle and St David was canonized by the Catholic church after his death. March 1st is now a national holiday as it regarded to be the date that he died.

Why should I visit Wales on Saint David’s?

We truly believe that St David’s day is a fantastic time to utilise our campervan hire in Wales. If you’re wanting a proper cultural experience in which you get to fully embrace Welsh mythos and tradition, it is the perfect time to go. In Wales, many people attend parades, church services or choral recitals in celebration. The National St David’s Day Parade in Cardiff is an event not to be missed. Here you’ll find a spectacle full of dragons and theatre, and apparently, the crowd gets together to sing the Welsh national anthem ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.’ Plus, you’ll get to see a host of daffodils, as people usually wear them to commemorate the day. You can begin to leave Winter behind you and embrace the Spring. You seriously won’t find a better time to go.

Why use a Campervan hire?

Travelling can be a nightmare. Booking a hotel and trying to find a cheap mode of transport can seem impossible. That’s why a campervan hire in Wales is ideal. Rockin Vans was founded out of a passion for campervans and motorhomes. We believe it is the best, most cost-effective way to have a bespoke holiday. You can do exactly what you want to do when you want to do it. You could visit Edinburgh and then decide on a whim to go to Inverness instead of continuing with your stay there. It makes for an easier, more liberating experience. It will also save you a ton of money. Each campervan comes with its own kitchen space so that you don’t have to spend every day of your holiday eating in expensive restaurants. You’ll be travelling comfortably in your own home away from home.

You may be concerned about the technicalities of it all. While you may be sold on the idea of our campervan hire, the unknown details might put you off. Trying something new can be scary; we get it. While we do have a frequently asked questions page that you can reference, we don’t mind emphasising the ease of our hire service again. The Rockin Vans service is meant to offer freedom to travel, not an intense sense of anxiety. You can pick up a campervan from anywhere; we bring it to you and do all the paperwork then and there. We also have drop-off points in Edinburgh, the West of Scotland, Birmingham and London. For this reason, we recommend getting in contact with us sooner rather than later so as to avoid disappointment. For those wanting to save a little bit of money, we do also have campervan relocation deals running throughout the year. This involves specific pick-up and drop-off locations during set periods for greatly reduced rates. This means that you could have one of our fantastic campervan hires for as little as £5 per night. These deals change every week, so it is worth keeping an eye on our page. For more information on this or our other campervan hire deals in Glasgow, please feel free to get in contact.
